Ta’at Ke Wast’e Teri Khidmat Ke Wast’e, Ana Huwa Wujud Mein Apna Adum Se Hai

After being assigned to khidmat in Aljamea-tus-Saifiyah, Karachi, a few years later I was summoned by Ameer al-Jamea Syedi Najmuddin Saheb QR to Surat.

Owing to tough financial circumstances, I had to borrow Qardan Hasana from several people during my stay in Surat. Although I was unsure about my return to Karachi, I believed I would have enough time to settle up the debts before heading back home.

Just when I had started to seek comfort in my confidence, I was informed that Burhanuddin Moula RA had instructed me to return to Karachi immediately after Imtehan, which were ending a few days later.

The thought of going back home to Karachi rushed a feeling of warmth, but my blood ran cold the very next moment thinking about the debt.

Not knowing where to go or what to do, I sought refuge in Qubbah Najmiyah, laid my head on the Qabr Mubarak of Syedna Abdeali Saifuddin RA and recited the following verse with tearful eyes.

واجهدني الفقر من مدة * فاعط العطايا يداً بيد

O Moula! Long have I been tested by hardships. Bestow upon me from your treasures without further delay.

Imtehan would end the next day, and I would leave the day after.

On the following day, Moulana RA presided over wada bethak and bestowed a ‘wada nu salam’ upon every talabat and khidmat guzar who attended Imtehaan.

Just like everyone else, I performed salam and Moulana RA handed me the ‘wada nu salam’.

At the time that I was leaving, Moulana RA turned towards Miyansaheb al-Shaikh Ibrahim Yamani Saheb and expressed a gesture which I could not comprehend.

Without any delay, Miyansaheb conveyed an envelope to Moulana RA, which Moulana RA then handed over to me with a broad smile.

Excited. Humbled. Overwhelmed. Puzzled. I performed shukr and left.

Expecting a letter or Misal Mubarak, I opened the other envelope.

Left dumbstruck, I fell on my knees. The envelope took in the precise amount I had needed to settle my debts.

How? I wondered with tears running down my cheeks. I relived what I had done the night before and got the answer.

TRIBUTE

Light-eyed, regular height, and a fair complexion; Janab Shk Ismail Bhai would never go unnoticed. He was a blend of both; discipline and tenderness. He would never forget to wear a smile, yet, his presence would be enough to straighten things at times. Given the status he held, some may think he would have been out of reach, however, he was always one of all.

Even in the final years of khidmat, when he was enduring severe medical difficulties, he always made a point to attend Aljamea. Every time when students would pay him a visit at his residence, he would always mention his desire to have the final breaths of his life in Aljamea. Such was his extraordinary love for a place that he served for fifty years.

Janab left us on 27th Rajab 1438 in Karachi at the time of Imtehan. Upon hearing the news of his end, Moulana Mufaddal Saifuddin TUS stated; “Ghani mohti raat lidi che”, “pachas waras lag khidmat kidi”.

As we celebrate fifty years of Aljamea’s campus in Karachi, we can perceive Janab’s presence among us. Someone of his sort can never be forgotten. Hence, he is not missed. Missed are those who leave.

Ab Aur Tujhsa Kaheen Kiya Koi Kareem Mile, Sila’e Madhe Jahan Jannat un Na’eem Mile

Moulana Mufaddal Saifuddin’s TUS discourses comprise of various elements, amongst which, some remain constant. Dua mubarak and prayers for mumineen is one of them. Whatever the occasion, whichever the place, the portion of dua mubarak is something which is always a part of His TUS discourses.

On one instance, during His TUS waaz mubarak on the Urs Mubarak of Syedna Qutbuddin Shaheed RA in Ahmedabad, Moulana TUS was praying for mumineen, pleading Allah TA for the safety of mumineen from all kinds of worldly and unworldly disasters, diseases and distresses.

Amidst His plea, Moulana TUS, with a keen intent, specifically did dua mubarak for those who were burned. It was something not common. I was surprised, and it kept me wondering.

Until after the waaz mubarak, I received an arzi by a mumin, requesting dua mubarak and shifa from Moulana TUS concerning a child who was severely burned. What happened thereafter was no surprise. The child was saved, and is living happily under the thanda saaya of our beloved Moula TUS.

It was then, when I was able to comprehend the cause of Moulana’s TUS sudden dua mubarak for the burnt.

It is apparent how the spontaneous and ‘unheard of’ dua mubarak expressed by Moulana TUS and the events that took place afterwards were anything but a coincidence.

Moulana TUS is our spiritual father and mother, and thus, He TUS listens to our hearts.

Marhoom Shk Mustafa Bhai Currim

It is suffice to say that Janab Shk Mustafa Bhai Currim had the sharaf of serving Moulana TUS and His TUS honorable family his entire life. He had a habit of sharing his reflections based on the countless shanaat of Huzureala TUS he frequently used to witness.

This account was narrated by Janab Shk Mustafa Bhai Currim to Mulla Mufaddal Bhai Shk Zainuddin Bhai during Janab’s visit to Colombo, following Moulana’s TUS safar mubarak to Ahmedabad in the year 1436. Mulla Mufaddal Bhai had the pleasure of hosting Janab in Saifee Villa.

TRIBUTE

Seldom does one come across a unique personality whose loss creates a void in the lives of many – and to this league belonged Janab Sh Mustafa Bhai Currim.

The devastating news of his sudden demise stunned mumineen into shock, disbelief and total despair.

Sh Mustafa Bhai was a warrior. He had the voice of a gladiator and the soft heart of a true friend. He was the battle-horse amongst the other steeds, trained and disciplined in the art of khidmat.

He was an exemplary personality, the perfect blend of character, yin and yang. He was your teacher, your friend, your mentor, your adviser, someone you know you could count on, and always lent you his ear. All this along with fact that he was one of the most renowned, most trusted and most dynamic khidmat guzaars of our time.

Some may ask, “what did he do?” “what did he handle?”. I would reply, “you’re asking the wrong question, what didn’t he do?” No-one would ever know what his responsibilities comprised of – but those who had a hint of it, knew that it was out of the norm. No task was too much for him, and no matter how big or how hard, he was always calm and collected, and never seemed un-phased. All this, while he maintained his fond humor, the simplicity of normality, tranquility, and the most important human values of love and compassion.

Janab Shk Mustafa Bhai in Saifee Villa, Colombo, Sri Lanka.
Janab Shk Mustafa Bhai following Moula TUS in Saifee Villa, Colombo, Sri Lanka.
He set an example for all khidmat guzaars by his work ethic, his multi-tasking, his dedication, and his never seizing – unwavering love for Jamea.

We pray to Allah TA to elevate his soul to the loftiest realms of Jannat. He served Moula TUS on earth, and we know, wherever he is, he will continue to do so.

Andaze Karam Hai Mere Aqa Ke Nirale, Konain Jo Mange To Kare Uske Hawale

Each time a Mumin looks at Moula, all that he/she hopes and prays for is ‘two seconds’. That’s right. ‘Aik Nazar’..

And here, I have an account to tell.

Burhanuddin Moula RA was present in Sidhpur for Asharah Mubarakah, and fortunately our group of muminaat were there for the ‘zenabiyah’ course. After attending the Asharah Mubarakah we decided to present a shukr zyafat. A friend and I from Karachi decided to araz a gold coin towards the zyafat.

As our araz was forwarded, the relevant khidmat guzaar turned our request down as Moula RA did not appear to have any vacant date.

Nevertheless, my friend and I decided to araz the gold coin to Moula RA.

We were standing on the staircase where Moula RA was to arrive in some time.

As Moula RA arrived, we both presented our gold coins to which Moula RA inquied, “Aa gaini saa waste araz karo chho?”.  We replied “Moula, aa shukur na najwa araz karye chhey”, to which Moula RA pronounced: “Khuda ghani barakat aape!”and repeated it a couple of times.

Following the acquaintance, the same night, my friend and I went for Moula’s RA qadambosi. It was my friend’s turn while I was standing behind her, as Moula RA addressed her: “Tame mane gaini araz kidi thi ne?” and she only managed to say “Ji moula, mein ane maari friend..” before she was whisked out of the line.

My turn came. No response from Moula RA.

I wept.

When I returned to my utara, I could not stop crying. Was it because of my sins that Moula RA had not responded to me?, I thought.

A week after, I was standing in the masjid sehen for didar.

Moula RA was exiting from the masjid and entering the sehen where thousands of mumineen were waiting for Him RA.

I stood hands folded with tears in my eyes imploring for his momentary attention when that very moment Moula RA pointed towards me, walked closer and said “Gaini tuyye araz kidi thi ne? Tashreef mili tane?”

He RA would not miss you in thousands. But yes, He RA is deeply missed by thousands today.

Teri Dua Ka Sabab Hai Ke Sidhi Parhti Hai, Kabhi Jo Karta Hun Tadbeer Bil’khata Ulti

Few years ago, I traveled to Mumbai, to present my wajebat in the Hazrat Imammiya of Aqa Moula Syedna Mohammad Burhanuddin RA.

When I entered the room where Moula RA was presiding, I totally forgot all I had precisely memorized and rehearsed earlier, to seek dua for my parents, brothers, job et cetera.

While I stood in front of Moula RA with tears in my eyes, I spontaneously uttered: “Moula bairo hamela che, naam ni araz che”.

I hadn’t finished my words as Moula RA immediately pronounced ‘Murtaza’. I reiterated the araz once again, and Moula RA repeated ‘Murtaza’.

Before I could further progress the araz, I was on my way to the exit.

I was surprised. Moula RA did not inquire about the names of the parents neither Moula RA asked whether we already had a baby. Just one name ‘Murtaza’.

I blamed myself as I thought I had blown the opportunity by not presenting the araz properly. ‘I should have written the araz’, ‘I should have gone through someone’, were the distressing thoughts which kept me unsettled for about 3 months.

Until we were blessed with a baby boy on 18th November.

The story does not end here.

I was awestruck when my son’s chatti coincided with the very day in which Rasool Allah SAW appointed Ali Murtaza AS as his successor.

‘Murtaza’, He RA had already chosen the name for us.

Ae Aale Taha Ke Pyaare Ae Saif e Deen Sarwar, Tumhe Ye Mumineen Jhuk Kar Salam Kehte Hain

It was Syedna Taher Saifuddin’s RA final visit to Karachi and I was a student in STD 3 in the CMS school, which was located very near to Adam Masjid, where Syedna Taher Saifuddin RA would usually preside over bethaks.

Relatively, getting the sharaf of qadambosi in those days could be well described as ‘a piece of cake’. Mostly, the bethaks would be held in forenoon, hence, sneaking out of the school for qadambosi was part of my routine.

One such day, the recess bell went off and instinctively, I headed towards the bethak, until I realized that I had nothing to perform salam with, besides what my mother had handed me that morning; 15 paisa to bring home some fresh mint (pudina) and coriander (dhanya) leaves.

We were crimping and saving in that stage of life.

Ignorant of everything else, I split the 15 paisa into three halves of 5 paisa each with the intention of doing Moulana’s RA qadambosi thrice.

I rushed towards the masjid, performed salam twice and rejoined the queue for the third time.

After the third time, Moulana RA looked at me and said, “yahan aaw”. I stood there bewildered whilst Moulana RA with a radiant smile on his face queried; “15 paisa to khatam thai gaya, hawey tu dhanyo ne pudino kem lesey?”.

I was startled.

Moulana RA, thereupon, instructed Miyan saheb Shk Ibrahim Bhai Yamani to bring 20 paisa to be handed over to me and said, “aa 15 paisa no dhanyo ne pudino leje, aney 5 paisa si, aa masjid na bahar aik bakery che, maney khabar chey taney ehnu ‘cake powder’ ghanu bhaawey chey, aa bija 5 paisa si ye khai ne jaaje.”

Unable to comprehend the magnitude of what had just transpired, I was merrily on my way and did as I was told.

When I reminiscent that fateful day today, I run out of words to express the overwhelming emotion that fills heart, but Moulana knows what it conceals and He fulfils what it wishes for.

For it was none other than Syedna Taher Saifuddin RA who would state the following sentence with sheer confidence; “tamra ghar ma aik chamchi girey chey, to mara kaan ma ehnu awaaz awey chey.”

Hai Inke Dil Mein Bohot Mehr Aur Bohot Ishfaq, Hai Ye To Waqe’i Ae Momin’o Pidar Apna

When I was about six, I was diagnosed with a ruptured appendicitis. I was rushed to the hospital and operated. All I can remember is unbearable pain before losing consciousness and waking up in the recovery room.

This is what my parents said happened in the interim: the doctor informed them that my appendix had ruptured, leading to septicemia, due to which the infection had spread throughout my body. Unfortunately, my survival chances were slim to none.

Before the surgery commenced, the doctor had left saying that only a miracle could save me.

My parents and grandparents turned to prayer: they invoked the name of Burhanuddin Moula RA during their constant dua’s to Allah TA.

Hours later, the doctor emerged from the surgery room and anxiously approached my mohta nani, who was preoccupied in her prayers.

He exclaimed that a man with an awe-inspiring semblance was in the surgery room with him, in ‘bright white clothes’ who gave him the confidence to proceed with the surgery. Someone telling him what to do, someone instructing and supervising throughout the successful operation. Upon the fortuitous surgery, the doctor said, just as I tried to approach the man to thank him and inquire about his relation to the patient, he had left and was nowhere to be found.

The doctor added that it was not due to him that her grandson survived; it was due to the one who answered her prayers. The one who directed the surgery.

“mein tamaro haqiqi maa aney bawa chu” – is our Moula’s relationship with us which the doctor was unable to concede.

Hai Jaisa Nikokaar Pidar Hoga Pisar Bhi, Ye Ho Nahi Sakta Ke Shajar Aur Samar Aur

It was Shehre Ramazan, post Lailatul Qadr, November 1425h/2004, and Burhanuddin Moula RA was returning to his ghurfah mubarakah from Taheri masjid-Saify Mehel after delivering nabi na namo.

Me and my wife were waiting for our nisbat to be held on his august hands under the car shade, opposite to the fish tank. “Maula hamna nahi rukey kem ke aap tarat upar padhari jase ane tasbeeh il azam parhse, tamaru kaam nahi thai, mushkil lagey che” was the alert we got from the volunteers on duty.

Soon after alighting from his vintage pontiac, Burhanuddin Moula RA stood there and inquired to his khidmatguzars about a qasida written by an ustaad of Jamea. “Hamna mane je qasida apo sheikh abdeali ye, ye kaha che” He RA inquired softly. The khidmat guzars swiftly started searching for it but in vain. There were hardly 5-10 people around, waiting for didaar. “Aqa! Maula! Ji aqa! Aqa! Aqa! Maula!” were the words of apology from the khidmat guzar’s side.

“Hamna to mane nichey araz kido ! Kaha gayo?” said Burhanuddin Moula RA in a pressing tone with an evident jalaal in his aura. There was sheer silence all around. As if all the creation stood still. Every soul turned to stone. Such was our Moula’s RA keen reverence over mumineen’s arazo and hadaya.

Amidst all this, me and my wife were eagerly waiting to be blessed by His merciful nazar upon us, with the nisbat misri in our trembling hands.

Aware of the apprehensive ambiance, no one was willing to iniate the araz for our nisbat. In the meantime a khidmat guzar hesitantly did araz to Burhanuddin Moula RA for raza mubarak for the nisbat.

In his utmost jalaal, Burhanuddin Moula RA miraculously looked upon us from top to bottom. He RA fixed his nazar mubarak on us for a few seconds and preoccupied with the missing of qasida, turned away to depart from us.

Astounded and awestrucked, we stood there with tears in our eyes.

Just as He RA progressed past us, one of the khidmat guzar’s uttered, while I observed him trembling “Moula, Shehzada Mufaddal Bhaisaheb ye nisbat waste farmayu che”. Hereupon, Burhanuddin Moula RA instantly turned towards us, blessed us with his nazar mubarak from head to toe, and granted raza mubarak for nisbat.

My happiness knew no bounds.

Everyone present was completely bewildered by perceiving the instant attention Burhanuddin Moula RA exhibited at the mentioning of Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin’s TUS name, albeit He RA had already advanced ahead. It is surely evident what it meant.

Earlier that day Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin TUS had instructed me “aje rate upar nisbat karo Burhanuddin Moula na haath par ane 3 shawwal mein tamara nikah parhis”.

The beloved son, had always been apparent.

Pohnchoge Anqareeb Murad-e Dili Ko Tum, Nazdeeq In Ke Aae Jo Taal’e Rasa Huwe

Going thirty years back, me and my wife were passing an afternoon of one normal day, when my nine year old son, Mohammed, walked past us and suddenly fell to the ground. It looked normal as he lifted himself up until he tumbled again. I sensed trouble and immediately called the doctors. On observing Mohammed, they took my son to a neurosurgeon with an urgency, and he underwent a quick checkup.

The reports revealed that a nerve in Mohammed’s brain was miss-functioning due to which his spinal cord was loosing control over his legs, and eventually it would loose control over his body. We inquired further, to which the doctors informed that it might take six months to several years for Mohammed to partially recover provided that he receives continuous treatment. Mohammed was admitted the very next day.

Dejected and disheartened, we helplessly saw our child on the hospital bed as he looked back to us with hope.

On returning home, I decided to submit an araz to Burhanuddin Moula RA for raza mubarak before admitting Mohammed. Hence, I placed a call for Busaheba Amatullah Aisaheba QR, who fortunately attended the call, listened to the araz and asked me to call later again. When I called then, Moula RA graciously listened to the araz and replied “hame be teen din ma Qahera awiye che, magar yahan lawi sakta hoi to lawo”, I responded “Moula mein lawu chu” and immediately left for London.

As we traveled to London, Mohammed’s condition worsened. I had to lift him throughout, as his legs were static. He kept grieving “mane lage che mara bewe pag mara si alag thai che”. I responded with tears.

As we landed, I pronto informed Busaheba QR about our arrival in London, and she directed us to reach at Moula’s RA residence. An ambulance was awaiting us, and it was 11:30 PM when we left for Bonham House.

We reached Bonham House and I lifted Mohammed to Moulana’s RA gurfa mubarakah, where Moula RA was expecting us. Burhanuddin Moula RA was presiding on a chair as I placed Mohammed in front of him.

Moula RA keenly looked at Mohammed and inquired “su thai che tane?”, to which he replied “moula mara si ubho nathi thawatu”.

Moula RA vigorously stated “ubho tha”. Mohammed acknowledged and tried, but his legs simply would not move. When I tried to help him, Moula RA pronounced “na tame rehwa do”, and repeated again “ubho tha”. He tried again, but with no effect.

Burhanuddin Moula RA observed him, raised his finger towards him and decisively stated “mari aankh ma dekhi ne ubho tha”.

Fixing his eyes to Moula’s gaze and to everyone’s astonishment, Mohammed effortlessly stood up. Moula RA called him closer, brushed his body with His RA qadam mubarak, and asked me to bring sugar, so he could pronounce shifa on it.

Busaheba QR immediately went into the kitchen and brought a packet of sugar. Moula RA pronounced shifa mubarak, gave it to Mohammed and said “aane jem gamey aim leje, chai ma, thanda doodh ma, lukhi jamwi hoi to aim, jem pasand hoi”.

Thereon Moula RA granted us permission to leave, and instructed me to take Mohammed for a repeat checkup, and stated “mane reports batawjo”. As we left, Mohammed returned walking.

The next day, on the basis of his previous reports, Mohammed underwent a repeat check up in London. Just after the tests, the panel of five senior doctors, who were supervising Mohammed’s case, called for an urgent meeting with us. They were stunned to witness the reports clear. They reconfirmed if my son really suffered from anything. In fact, one of them asked Mohammed if he had made this up to buy a trip to London. Sensing their curiousness, I narrated them what had happened a night earlier.

Thereafter, I requested the in-charge neurosurgeon for the test reports who was still overwhelmed with what he had observed. He needed more time to prepare the final report, thus, he called me and my wife at his residence the next day.

Next morning, we went to his residence where he asked me to repeat narrating what had happened between Mohammed and Moula RA. Thereupon, he handed us the reports with his own written verdict on the case, which said ‘His Holiness did something which is beyond our imaginations’.

Acquiring the report, I rushed to the airport as Moulana RA was leaving for Qahera. With tears in my eyes, I managed to utter a few words of shukr, and presented the test reports. With a radiant smile, Burhanuddin Moula RA addressed all who were present “aa bacha na pag chala gaya tha, Imam uz Zaman ye shifa aapi che”.

On reaching Qahera, I took Mohammed to Moulana’s RA hazrat aaliya. While he presented salam, Moula RA reassured “aa yej bachu che?”, “haan Moula” I replied. Moulana RA directed Mohammed “wahan darwaza tak chali ne ja”, Mohammed did likewise, Moula RA added “pacho yahan aw”, he did as he was commanded with ease.

A child I was lifting a few days back as his legs were dead was walking better than before. Thereafter Moula RA repeated “aa bacha na pag chala gaya tha, Imam uz Zaman ye shifa aapi che”.

I saw Moulana Mohammed Burhanuddin RA bringing my son’s legs back to life, and I heard Him RA say – “Imam uz Zaman ye shifa api che”, the connection between what I saw and heard is as clear as day.

Burhane’din Shaha ni Jaho Jalali Dekho, Sultaan Moiz Ni Haqqan Izzat Talali Dekho

Imam Moiz AS once ordered one of his servants to prepare his bath. Some time later, when it was revealed that nothing had been done and the person entrusted with the duty had not even attempted to make any preparations. Everyone was furious and curious: what would the Imam’s AS reaction be?

The Imam AS arrived. Waited. Calm. Nothing else.  –  (Majalis Musaeraat)

This brings me to an instance when I was with Burhanuddin Moula RA, in London. Following a majlis, I received the sharaf of talaqqi as Maulana RA headed towards the lift. Before we could enter, someone had either summoned the lift to the basement or pressed some buttons inside the lift (without realizing), and off we went downstairs instead of upstairs. When we reached the basement, something else happened: the doors opened half way, and would not close. We tried closing them with our hands as we wanted to go up; they would just not open, nor would the lift move.

If you know the insides of an elevator – small, stuffy – you will understand why I was nervous. The first minute passed and I felt that the power would activate any instant and the door would open. Nothing happened. We could hear the voices of people outside the lift trying to do their bit to open the doors, but nothing helped.

The second minute passed. Then the third.

I was nervous. What would Moulana RA say?

The fourth minute passed. Then the fifth.

Suddenly, Moulana RA turned, smiled and asked: “Mehlam, tuyye kai dabawi lidu thhu? I stuttered: “Nahi, Moula, bairao kai aawi gaya hata… tesi shayad…”

They had called the fire engine, as they could not find the person who was in charge of maintenance, who had the master keys to the lift doors.

After a good seven minutes, the door opened.

When we stepped out of the lift, the expressions on the face of every mumin bhai and behn outside, were clearly visible. Nervous. Tense. Worried.

When Moula RA stepped outside, something fascinating and surprising happened. Moula RA, with all his calmness, looked up, smiled a charming broad smile and did ishaara with his mubarak hand towards each one present, expressing that there is nothing to worry about and everything was fine, and simply walked away, showing one of his heavenly and supreme attributes.

That is when my heart cried: “jo’ilto fidaak ya moulana”.
