Farq Itna Mahru Mein Hai Aur Mehr Charkh Mein, Tafreeq Jitni Nur Mein Hai Aur Naar Mein

‘Bolts of lightening that kindle in my soul fire of your love are a blessing, not a misfortune’ says the Persian poet Hafiz Shirazi. I feel exactly the same as I narrate my account.

The 27th of September 2020 was like any other day for me until noon; things took a dramatic turn as the night began to fall. Around 5 PM, my wife suddenly sensed heat and smoke in the living room which was right above the basement. Immediately, I came to realize that the basement was caught on fire.

I hurried down to check out what had happened. As I opened the basement door, plumes of black smoke dashed on my face and took me down. I realized the fire had taken hold and scrambled to get out of the house with my wife and mother. Due to the smoke and intense stench and heat inside the house, I had to pull my wife out from the terrace.

A crowd had gathered outside the house at the sight of clouds of black smoke billowing out of the basement. The fire brigade teams arrived at the scene after a good forty-five minutes. The fire was blazing as the teams launched into putting it out. Two hours had passed but the fire refused to die out.

In the meantime, I had an araz presented to Mufaddal Moula TUS for dua mubarak. Around 8 PM, I received the dua mubarak paigaam along with word that Moula TUS has directed to recite azaan. We recited the azaan and a few minutes later, member of the fire brigade team showed up and informed that the fire has been successfully put out.

The story does not end here.

Next day, we went down to look at the condition and clear the place. The basement used to store household items and documents in cartons which were stacked in a three tier shelf. Everything was reduced to ashes by the fire.

During the clean-up, my wife caught sight of a carton on the first tier of the shelf which appeared somewhat intact. It was striking because even things on the second and third tier had burned to a crisp. In astonishment, she advanced to pick the carton up. As she was sorting the things inside the box, she suddenly paused; and got teary.

A frame of al-Quran al-Majid and picture of Moulana Mohammad Burhanuddin RA with the zareeh mubarak of Imam Hussain AS were unaffected. The back side of al-Quran’s frame and borders of Burhanuddin Moula’s RA picture were damaged which evidenced that the fire, at some point, did come into contact with the frame and the picture.

How did the house survive such a fire that was merrily blazing for hours? How did my wife manage to come out of the house unhurt?

The answer to the questions rested in a carton inside the basement in the shape of al-Quran al-Majid’s frame and the picture of Moulana Mohammad Burhanuddin RA; connection between the two does not require an explanation.

Jo Mae Baqi Hai Jaan Bakhshe Hai Be Jaan Ko, Kuch To Jiya Hun Mein Pi Saqi Pila Aur Bhi

دیدار یار غایب دانی چه ذوق دارد

سعدى

What is it to get a sight of the loved one; do you know?

Ask a thirsty wandering in scorching heat; what a drop of rain means.

I deem the aforementioned verse a nearly-perfect manifestation of Mulla Shabbir Bhai Zakir’s relationship with Moula. His entire life revolved around the remembrance of Imam Hussain AS and the desire of obtaining a nazar mubarak, as he had a saying: “moula ni aik nazar talab karta raho, buss aik nazar”. It is common knowledge that Mulla Shabbir Bhai was a celebrated recipient of Moula’s exceptional attention at all times; yet, his thirst kept growing.

Mufaddal Moula TUS visited Karachi last year. As was Mulla Shabbir Bhai’s practice of following Moula in his travels, he was also among the visitors. I got the opportunity of hosting Mulla Shabbir Bhai and Dr. Mohammad Bhai at my residence. In more than one respect, his short stay has had a powerful impact on our lives.

He used to be with Moula for the most part of the day. Be it bethak, namaz, or zyafat, one would always find him around. Several times during the day, he got blessed with Moula’s nazar mubarak. Yet, it was his thirst that made him special.

One Monday morning on 20th of Zilqad 1440/22nd July 2019 after we returned back from Moula’s fajar namaz at Adam Masjid something happened which shall never leave my memory. As was customary, Moula had blessed Mulla Shabbir Bhai with a particular nazar and tabassum after namaz. The delight was evident in his posture as we entered the house. Out of routine, we all headed to our rooms for rest; however, I saw Mulla Shabbir Bhai purposely hanging back as if waiting for everyone to withdraw into the rooms.

I felt there was something in his mind and decided to have a look-see through the crack of the door. What I witnessed left me in complete awe.

Mulla Shabbir Bhai unpretentiously approached a portrait of Moula in the living room and with his hands folded, started to weep. He touched the picture innumerable times and kept uttering: ghanu jeewo moula, ghanu jeewo, as tears dropped through his eyes. Following a good five minutes of the same, he did matam for some time and silently walked to his room.

I stood there in amazement.

The conduct was remarkably exceptional for someone who had performed didar less than one hour ago and would be doing the same shortly thereafter. Yet, it was his thirst cultivated within limitless love that never wavered. The incident was a prime example.

It may be true that Mulla Shabbir Bhai suffered from sight problems. Nevertheless, he undoubtedly possessed an extraordinary vision: he saw Moula, anywhere and everywhere.

It was due to his everlasting thirst that he always found a way to acquire a nazar mubarak throughout his life even in his final moments.

Although he stopped breathing yesterday, I am sure his thirst for nazar mubarak continues to rise. It always meant to him more than life.

Nazdeek Aagaya Hai Jo Wa’da Wisaal Ka, Kya Kya Tarap Raha Hai Dil ‘e Nasabur Hai

Years ago, as narrated by our elders, Moulana Mohammad Burhanuddin RA stopped around Maloni for Maghreb prayers on his way to Madh Island. About 50 years later, Moulana Mufaddal Saifuddin TUS blessed Maloni with his presence on the 10th of February 2019; the day that brought about life-changing transmutation of my life.

As soon as I got word of Moula’s visit, I resolved to host a zyafat.

Not so long ago, I had suffered from a major loss in my business. Surrounded by debts and experimenting with a new business line, I was living on the edge. Regardlessly, I was determined to do everything in order to acquire the sharaf of zyafat; the catalyst for recovery.

I got my self registered and on the 9th of February, a day prior to Moula’s visit, the routine procedures were finalized. A long-desired wish was shaping up into reality. I scrambled to make preparations.

The same evening, as we were making the arrangements, a bhaisaheb came over to our house with the news that zyafat would not take place. Our house was on the fourth floor at the end of the seventy-two-step staircase; certainly, an unfavourable factor considering there was no lift in the building.

Crestfallen and shattered, I could not contain myself from crying. The next minute, I left for Raudat Tahera.

I placed my head on Burhanuddin Moula’s RA qabar mubarak, recited Imam Hussain’s AS shahadat and uttered several times: “moula mane madad karo, aapna mansoos ne mara ghare lai awo”.

Just as I was exiting Raudat Tahera, I received a call from our Janab. He told me to continue with the preparations and that he would present an araz to Moula TUS for the zyafat. Nothing was certain, he said. Moula TUS would decide.

Preparations were complete. I told my family that if nothing else, we would stand outside the building and do araz to Moula TUS to bless our house with a nazar mubarak.

Moula TUS arrived at Maloni on the 10th of February after Maghreb. Ten minutes before the expected zyafat time, I was informed that Moula TUS would visit my house. With tears in my eyes, I rushed to receive Moula TUS and got the sharaf of accompanying Him in the car. Moula TUS stated: “tamara ghare zyafat che?”. “Ji moula” I replied. As Moula TUS inquired about my business, I did araz of the details and said: “moula ghanu dain che” to which Moula TUS declared: Sabar karjo, mein dua karis”.

By that time, we had arrived at our house.

Moula TUS headed towards the staircase and reached the house at an extraordinary pace; much more swiftly than it would usually take us to walk up the very stairs in routine. With a beaming tabassum absent of any sign of discomfort, Moula TUS entered the house. My family performed salaam following which Moula TUS blessed each room with his qadam mubarak.

After spending approximately thirty minutes with us, Moula TUS stood up to leave. I was standing near the staircase when Moula TUS exited the house. With my hands folded and teary eyes, I uttered: “Moula mein aapne ghani takleef aapi”. On the very instant, Moula TUS replied: “mumin na ghare awa ma koi takleef nathi”.

On the first floor, while walking down the stairs, I stated: “Moula aap mara ghare aya ye Burhanuddin Moula no mojizo che”. Before I could mention anything further, Moula TUS turned around with a smile, looked into my eyes, and said: “tame bawaji saheb pase gaya tha ne?”.

He knew what I had done the night before.

Six years ago today, for an instance, we thought Moulana Mohammad Burhanuddin RA left us. We know He never has. We know He never would.

Mujhse Bimar Pe Gar Ho Nazar e Mehr Zara, Ae Maseeha Abhi Chehre Pe Bahali Ho Jae

It had been over two years since I fell victim to back muscle spasms. It started off with mild tension in the back and before long, it intensified into a critical case of regular physiotherapy and meds. I wouldn’t be able to recline, carry anything, or even consider putting myself to any sort of physical exercise.

Stiff as a board; exactly how I used to define my state upon inquiry.

In the midst of all this, a glimmer of hope emerged. Mufaddal Moula TUS would visit Karachi.

On many instances throughout Moula’s TUS week-long visit, I did all to present an araz to Moula TUS but nothing appeared to materialize.

My condition continued to deteriorate.

Friday, July 26, 2019, was announced as the day of Moula’s TUS wada. On the night of 25th, Moula TUS would preside over the inauguration of Zaini Masjid and I deemed the occasion my last best chance. With some medical assistance, I reached the venue in the hope of getting a nazar mubarak, if nothing else.

Just as Moula TUS arrived and was near to move past me, the crowd around me lost the grip standing in the way and putting my final hopes to rest.

I returned back to Aljamea sunk in pain and anguish. Those around me and aware of the circumstances tried to dry my eyes but to no avail.

The following morning when I woke up for namaz, I was in pretty bad shape. Attending wada majlis looked impossible.

I decided to get some shuteye. In the dream, I saw Moula TUS entering my room wearing pagri and dupatto similar to his appearance earlier that night. Moula TUS got near my bed, brushed his haath mubarak on my back twice with a wide tabassum on his face and left.

Ecstatic and bewildered, I got up from sleep sitting upright with a force. As I was trying to recollect the dream, I failed to take into account a defining moment for me.

The pain had entirely vanished.

I attended the wada majlis with all normalcy brimming with the sense of gratitude that kept translating into tears as I made way to the venue.

Amongst the large audience, I saw thousands of mumineen with the extent of gratitude similar to mine. Indeed, all were the recipients of Moula’s TUS blessings in one way or the other.

I was just one amongst thousands.

Hairat Zado’n Ke Haal Pe Ho Ik Nigahe Lutf, Muddat Se Phir Rahe Hain Ye Tum Par Fida Huwe

On 27th June 2019, Sarangpur was blessed with Mufaddal Moula’s TUS visit and my family with the fortune of hosting him at our houses for Qadam Mubarak.

Around 11 in the morning, Moula TUS arrived at my brother’s house. In line with the usual practice, my brother was escorting Moula TUS to where the arrangements were made for his sitting. Much to everyone’s surprise, Moula TUS stopped and headed towards a room at a distance of 10-15 footsteps from the entrance door.

Moula TUS instructed that the door of the room be closed. He remained inside, alone. Struck with awe, we started to panic and faces started to drop.

About five minutes later, Moula TUS stepped out of the room with a gleaming smile on his face. Everyone present was perplexed. No one had the faintest idea about what had happened.

Instantaneously, I underwent a revelatory moment. I rushed out to fetch a photograph of Moulana Taher Saifuddin RA which would put everyone’s astonishment to rest. I handed the picture over to my brother Munawwar Hussain. With tears in his eyes, he presented the picture to Mufaddal Moula TUS and uttered: “moula, syedna taher saifuddin hamara ghare tashreef laya che”. Overwhelmed by the realization, he couldn’t go into detail and neither could I.

The smile on Moula’s face grew up. He acknowledged the fact that we had known what had happened a few moments earlier and pointing towards the picture he asked: “aa kon che?”. My brother replied: “hamara dada Gulam Murtaza Essa Bhai che”.

Moula TUS resuscitated a moment in the history;

Nearly seventy years ago, Moulana Taher Saifuddin RA blessed our house with his Qadam Mubarak. During his visit, Moulana Taher Saifuddin RA sat in the very room in which, seventy years later, his grandson chose to stay.

We had an invaluable treasure at our house and Moula TUS brought it to light. Syedna Taher Saifuddin RA used to repeatedly proclaim: “Bhai Burhanuddin ne lai jau ehna qadmo na niche dawlat che”We witnessed the same in his successor.

Sa’il Na Kyun Ho Nutq Se Khushtar Teri Zuban, Gohar Fishan Kalam Hai Tere Jawab Ka

On the 5th of December 2018, Mufaddal Moula TUS graced Dahanu Road with his presence and presided over the iftetah of the masjid. On the same day, I was blessed with the sharaf of hosting a Majlis at my house.

En route to my house, I was in luck to accompany Moula TUS in the car. As is customary, Moula TUS quizzed me regarding my business, family, etcetera. Amidst the brief conversation, I picked up some courage and uttered: “moula mein aap si kai puchu?”. “han pucho”, Moula TUS responded with a smile.

With my hands folded I asked: “Moula aapni hobby su che?”.

Everyone present in the car was startled.

Even before my words faded, Moula TUS stated on the instant: “tamara sagla si milwu mari hobby che”, which was followed by a broad grin.

Moula’s TUS instantaneous reply left me, as well as everyone present around totally speechless.

This can only be said by someone who is always heard saying: “tamein mari mohabbat karo cho, ehna karta ghani zyada mein tamara si mohabbat karu chu”.

Zah’e Tal’e Hai Khusha Bakht Hai Uske, Naam Labb Par Ho Tera Jaan Jo Tann Se Nikle

Asifiye mvua imemnyea; he who praises rain has been rained upon.

Here begins my story:

In the year 2000, Burhanuddin Moula visited Dar es Salam. I was a five-year-old girl in KG 2 of Al Madrassa tus Saifiyah tul Burhaniyah. It was my cousin’s nikah, and my fuaji got the sharaf of zyafat. So little I made the most of it.

Without being properly mindful of the zyafat rituals, and with extra najwa covers given to me by my father in case of necessity, I decided to use them all for Burhanuddin Moula RA, going to do salaam as many times as I could. I went with my dadima, nanima, masi and a couple times on my own. I was not completely certain, but I sensed that Burhanuddin Moula RA had been noticing me. After keeping on standing in line for salaam more than a few times, I went out to play. However, behind my back, there was a whole other scenario unfolding.

Burhanuddin Moula RA had asked for me; “dikri ne lei awo”. All the daughters in our family were presented to Moula RA but Moula RA kept saying: “nai, wo dikri ne lai awo”.

Soon enough, I was found by my father, who had frantically searched for me everywhere, after the realization that I was the only child who wasn’t presented to Moula RA. As soon as I got near Moula RA, He RA smiled and inquired: su naam che taru?. Terrified and wondering what I may have done wrong to be called for, I uttered my name. My voice couldn’t have been lower because of which I had to repeat the name thrice, each time a little louder.

Moula RA asked me my age. Taken aback again for some reason, my volume went down. In a very low voice, I said five. Again, I had to repeat it. By the third time when Moula RA asked again, I had gathered up some good confidence, which was enough for me to extend my palm right up and say five. Moula RA laughed, stroked my cheek like he used to and instructed my father there: “bhai Mufaddal pase lai jau”.

Shortly after that, I was standing in front of Mufaddal Moula TUS, equally terrified as I had been in front of Burhanuddin Moula RA earlier. But, a little confident too, because, with that cheek stroke and the tabassum I had gotten from Moula RA, I felt stuffed with aplomb. I did salaam to Mufaddal Moula TUS and right after, Moula TUS started quizzing me; asked me Burhanuddin Moula’s name, Syedna Taher Saifuddin saheb’s name, asked me to recite salawaat, and say the names of panjatan paak. I answered everything correctly, with a big smile, feeling proud of myself.

Mufaddal Moula TUS then instructed me to recite Imam Hussain’s shahadat. Unfortunately, I didn’t know it at that time and I said, “school ma hajhi nathi sikhawu”. Upon hearing this, Mufaddal Moula TUS directed me to do matam. I obeyed. Moments later, I was carried away by my father and got busy in playing.

Next thing I remember is being at school the next day and I saw students being given a piece of paper that had Imam Hussain’s AS shahaat on it and everyone had to memorize it that very day.

For a long stretch of time, I used to recall this instance in order to flaunt my chance of having been able to converse with Burhanuddin Moula RA and Mufaddal Moula TUS. However, with time, the episode stemmed into a profound realization of identity for me. Burhanuddin Moula RA inquired about my extrinsic identity and routed me to Mufaddal Moula TUS who’s inquiry was an interpretation of mumin’s intrinsic identity. Ever since then, this realization of abiding by both identities has helped me triumph over the toughest hurdles of life.

Na Mile Tujhsa Jo Dhunde Falak Sar Gashte, Mah’o Khursheed Ki Aankhon Pe Laga Kar Ainak

In the year 2005, I lived through one of the hardest chapters of my life when all of a sudden I sensed an unusual discomfort in my eyes. As much as I was concerned about the problem, I turned a blind eye to it expecting it to be a routine allergic reaction.

In time, the pain escalated and the eyes would constantly exude water to such an extent that I was finding it hard to see. For an instant, I was struck by the fear of losing my sight.

Immediately thereafter, I rushed for a test.

Following an inspection, I was prescribed to put on a pair of glasses. Straight away, I acted on it tracking down a remedy but in vain. Nothing fairly happened other than that the pain worsened.

Plumbing the depths of helplessness, I could perceive darkness chasing me down. I had all but given up hope.

One night, I dreamt myself in the presence of Syedna Mohammad Burhanuddin RA. Upon witnessing my state, Moula RA turned, angled himself toward me, and brushed his labb mubarak on my eyes. As I lifted my sight up, I observed a wide smile on His face. All at once, a touch of serenity seeped through me.

I did not recall the dream until the following morning when I put on the spectacles and decided to pull them off then and there. I fell in with something remarkable.

The pain was gone.

I have not endured any pain in my eyes from there on.

With that said, my eyes water, yet, more. Seeing that today, they weep in the remembrance of Syedna Mohammad Burhanuddin RA.

As a saying in Malay goes; “jauh di mata, dekat di hati” (far from the eyes, close to the heart).

Ta’at Ke Wast’e Teri Khidmat Ke Wast’e, Ana Huwa Wujud Mein Apna Adum Se Hai

After being assigned to khidmat in Aljamea-tus-Saifiyah, Karachi, a few years later I was summoned by Ameer al-Jamea Syedi Najmuddin Saheb QR to Surat.

Owing to tough financial circumstances, I had to borrow Qardan Hasana from several people during my stay in Surat. Although I was unsure about my return to Karachi, I believed I would have enough time to settle up the debts before heading back home.

Just when I had started to seek comfort in my confidence, I was informed that Burhanuddin Moula RA had instructed me to return to Karachi immediately after Imtehan, which were ending a few days later.

The thought of going back home to Karachi rushed a feeling of warmth, but my blood ran cold the very next moment thinking about the debt.

Not knowing where to go or what to do, I sought refuge in Qubbah Najmiyah, laid my head on the Qabr Mubarak of Syedna Abdeali Saifuddin RA and recited the following verse with tearful eyes.

واجهدني الفقر من مدة * فاعط العطايا يداً بيد

O Moula! Long have I been tested by hardships. Bestow upon me from your treasures without further delay.

Imtehan would end the next day, and I would leave the day after.

On the following day, Moulana RA presided over wada bethak and bestowed a ‘wada nu salam’ upon every talabat and khidmat guzar who attended Imtehaan.

Just like everyone else, I performed salam and Moulana RA handed me the ‘wada nu salam’.

At the time that I was leaving, Moulana RA turned towards Miyansaheb al-Shaikh Ibrahim Yamani Saheb and expressed a gesture which I could not comprehend.

Without any delay, Miyansaheb conveyed an envelope to Moulana RA, which Moulana RA then handed over to me with a broad smile.

Excited. Humbled. Overwhelmed. Puzzled. I performed shukr and left.

Expecting a letter or Misal Mubarak, I opened the other envelope.

Left dumbstruck, I fell on my knees. The envelope took in the precise amount I had needed to settle my debts.

How? I wondered with tears running down my cheeks. I relived what I had done the night before and got the answer.

Marhoom Janab Shk Ismail Bhai Mulla Ali Hussain Hoshangabadwala

Karachi, Pakistan

TRIBUTE

Light-eyed, regular height, and a fair complexion; Janab Shk Ismail Bhai would never go unnoticed. He was a blend of both; discipline and tenderness. He would never forget to wear a smile, yet, his presence would be enough to straighten things at times. Given the status he held, some may think he would have been out of reach, however, he was always one of all.

Even in the final years of khidmat, when he was enduring severe medical difficulties, he always made a point to attend Aljamea. Every time when students would pay him a visit at his residence, he would always mention his desire to have the final breaths of his life in Aljamea. Such was his extraordinary love for a place that he served for fifty years.

Janab left us on 27th Rajab 1438 in Karachi at the time of Imtehan. Upon hearing the news of his end, Moulana Mufaddal Saifuddin TUS stated; “Ghani mohti raat lidi che”, “pachas waras lag khidmat kidi”.

As we celebrate fifty years of Aljamea’s campus in Karachi, we can perceive Janab’s presence among us. Someone of his sort can never be forgotten. Hence, he is not missed. Missed are those who leave.

Gilman’o Hur Jinn’o Malak Ins’o Wahsh’o Tair, In Mein Se Kon Hai Jo Tera Madh Khwan Nahin

Qurbana; a word in the Pashto language referred to someone you’d sacrifice your life for. That is how Syedna Mohammad Burhanuddin RA is remembered by the Pashtuns who are in luck to have met him.

The year 1996 was the last time Burhanuddin Moula RA visited Quetta. It was a visit, which has become a part of our very existence. It will never part from us.

During the visit, mumineen of Quetta were blessed to host a picnic for Him RA at Hanan guesthouses.

In one instance, Burhanuddin Moula RA was calmly seated on the balcony of the guest house with a few mumineen around him.

In the meanwhile, I saw a Pashtun in possession of a Chakor (the national bird of Pakistan). I instantly closed in on him perceiving the opportunity of carrying the bird to Moula RA.

It is worth mentioning that the Chakor is considered as a sacred bird by the Pashtuns. It is rarely sold, and usually, the Pashtuns who own it, do not let it out of their sight.

Here, the Pashtun readily handed over the bird to me.

I held on to the bird and presented it to Burhanuddin Moula RA. “Moula aa chakor che” I uttered. Moula RA took a look at the bird and offered a smile. Before I could say anything more, someone from the scene mentioned; “Moula aanu gosht ghanu lazeez hoi che”.

Moula RA attended the person, rounded his gaze back to me and stated with a beaming smile on his face; “khaiye to khabar parhe ke kitnu lazeez che”. Despite everyone around reacted with a giggle, I was tensed. Having had done what Moula RA wished for was a bit of a task.

The Pashtun had witnessed everything that had happened.

As I handed the Chakor back to him, I somehow managed to mention Moula’s RA desire of savouring the bird. I was certain of his denial. Surprisingly, he pulled a knife out of his pocket and cut the bird open. I was struck dumb. He instructed me to have the bird broiled and presented to Moula RA.

Following a short while, I presented the Chakor to Burhanuddin Moula RA. The instant He RA saw the bird, He exclaimed; “Hamna to jeewtu laya tha”The bliss was evident.

Moula RA extended his hath mubarak and took a morsel of the Chakor. All eyes were on him. Everyone including myself expected that Moula RA would describe the savour of the Chakor. Instead, He RA chose to express his delight in an unexpected way. He RA stated; “aa Chakor Bhai Mufaddal ne apo”

It has been twenty-two years since the happening. Things have changed. Yet, somethings last forever. Above is a perfect exemplar.

Today, as we celebrate His RA Milaad Mubarak, we know that He RA is still with us.

I say this the same way I used to say before; Moula Mubarak, Moula Mubarak.

But yes, today, my eyes tear.
